An SUV’s towing capacity is often a decisive factor for buyers looking for a versatile vehicle with high levels of performance; and the wide selection of available utility vehicles on the market can complicate things even further.

This is why Chaput Automobile presents this top 10 for best 2023 SUVs that offer a good towing capacity, according to their segment!

Small SUVs

These SUVs might be small, but they really do offer great performance on many levels! They might not provide you with the same towing capacity as larger SUVs, but they still offer generous towing capacities for vehicles of their size.

Jeep Compass

With a 2,000 pound towing capacity, the Jeep Compass is among the best SUVs of its segment when it comes to towing capacity. Another advantage is that it offers great all-terrain capabilities and loads of amenities, which makes it a compact SUV that should definitely be added to your list.

Ford Bronco Sport

When it comes to Ford, the Bronco Sport offers a maximum towing capacity of 2,200 pounds. But beware: some trims do not recommend towing, so you will have to keep this in mind while shopping.

Among the other SUVs that are worth mentioning in this segment, there is the Mitsubishi Outlander (2,000 pounds) and the Volkswagen Tiguan (between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds).

Jeep Renegade

This subcompact SUV is truly surprising: in fact, it offers a 2,000 pound towing capacity, which places it at the head of its segment. You will also love the superior off-road capabilities it offers and its bold and stunning design.

Fiat 500X

When looking at it, it is hard to imagine that the Fiat 500X has a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds! Although it does not offer the same off-road capabilities as the Renegade, it still remains an SUV that is worth your attention.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer (1,000 pounds), the Subaru Crosstrek (1,500 pounds), the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2,000 pounds) and the Toyota Corolla Cross (1,500 pounds) also offer a good towing capacity, while on other models like the Kia Seltos, the Volkswagen Taos, the Honda HR-V and the Nissan Qashqai, towing is not recommended.

Compact and midsize SUVs

The competition is fierce in this category, and manufacturers have to come up with smart ways to stand out from others. Here is a sneak peek of the towing capacity offered by these utilities, which are among the most popular with buyers!

Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is synonym of performance and elegance, and has been for several years. It is not surprising that it is so popular among drivers! Depending on selected trim, the Cherokee could provide you with a towing capacity of between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds, which places it at the top of its segment.

Moreover, it offers remarkable all-terrain capabilities, along with numerous trim options. You will definitely find one that is perfectly suited to your needs and budget!

Dodge Hornet

This all-new Dodge model offers the highest amount of power for its category, with 268 horsepower (285 horsepower for the plug-in hybrid trims). Moreover, it has a 2,000 pound towing capacity, which is much more than several of its rivals.

When it comes to competitors for the Cherokee and the Hornet, you will find the Ford Escape (from 2,000 to 3,500 pounds), the Toyota RAV4 (1,500 to 3,500 pounds), the GMC Terrain (1,500 pounds), along with the Honda CR-V (2,000 pounds), among others.

Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler has been known for decades for the exceptional off-road capabilities it offers. But did you know it also has a generous towing capacity? In fact, it can tow anywhere between 2,000 and 3,500 pounds; the highest capacity is reserved to the 4- door trims.

Its rivals like the Ford Bronco (3,500 to 4,500 pounds) and the Toyota 4Runner (5,000 pounds) have a higher towing capacity, but the Wrangler has the advantage of offering greater off-road capabilities. Moreover, it also offers plug-in hybrid trims, which are not available with the competition.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee, along with its version with 3- rows of seats –the Grand Cherokee L-, can tow up to 6,200 pounds for the models with the V6 engine and up to 7,200 pounds with the ones with the V8 powertrain.

Moreover, the Grand Cherokee also offers plug-in hybrid models that have nothing to envy from the competition, with a towing capacity that can reach up to 6,000 pounds.

The competing models (Bronco: 4,500 pounds, Honda Passport: 5,000 pounds, Kia Sorento: 2,000-3,500 pounds and the Lincoln Aviator: 6,700 pounds) simply cannot compete with what the Grand Cherokee has to offer.

Dodge Durango

The fastest and most powerful 3-row SUV of all time, the Dodge Durango commands respect thanks to its rugged silhouette, powerful powertrains and generous towing capacity that varies between 6,200 and 8,700 pounds, which places it at the head of its segment.

The GMC Acadia (4,000 pounds), the Nissan Pathfinder (3,500 to 6,000 pounds) and the Subaru Ascent (2000 to 5,000 pounds) are also good SUVs, but simply don’t offer as good a towing capacity.

Wagoneer et Grand Wagoneer

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are full-size 3- row SUVs that stand in a class of their own and take the definition of “luxury” to a whole other level. Offering up to 7- touch screens and 24- way power seats, they also offer powerful powertrains along with a towing capacity that varies between 9,850 and 10,000 pounds, which places them at the head of their segment.

Some of their main competitors are the Cadillac Escalade (7,700 to 8,000 pounds), the Ford Expedition (9,000 pounds) and the Toyota Sequoia (9,000 to 9,100 pounds).
